2016 ECCT-ICRT International Charity Golf Cup

Despite downpours for three days leading up to the event, ideal conditions for the 2016 ECCT-ICRT International Charity Golf Cup on Friday, 15 April were only interrupted by a single shower that lasted just four minutes. The tournament was held for the 13th consecutive year in support of the Community Services Center (CSC), a non-profit organization that offers counseling, information and support services to the international community in Taiwan. As in previous years, the tournament was co-hosted by the ECCT and International Community Radio Taipei (ICRT). As usual, it provided a perfect opportunity for Taipei's best amateur golfers to show off their golfing skills and support a good cause at the same time. Thanks to the sponsors and a portion of players' fees, NT$150,000 was raised for the CSC.

Once again, the tournament was held at Royal Kuan Hsi Golf Club in Hsinchu County, the venue of the first charity cup and many since then. The beautiful layout and scenery surrounding the Kuan Hsi course always makes it a popular choice for golf tournaments. 14 teams comprising ECCT members and supporters of the international community took a morning off work to support the event. Thanks to some generous sponsors, players were well taken care of throughout the day, starting with a complimentary breakfast and goodie bags before the game, a drinks tent on the first tee, more drinks at the 19th hole and a lavish banquet and prize giving ceremony to bring an end to a perfect day.

At the lunch banquet, ICRT Morning Show Host Terry Engel acted as MC. He kicked off with a few witty golf-related jokes. Afterwards he invited ECCT Vice Chairman Giuseppe Izzo to the stage together with ICRT CEO Tim Berge, Ryan Searle (representing Audi, the main sponsor) and ECCT CEO Freddie Höglund to present a cheque to Adam McMillan, Director of the CSC. McMillan went on to thank the sponsors, organisers and players for their support.

Then it was time for the prize-giving ceremony. Damp conditions on the course meant that scores were not as spectacular as the previous year but competition was fierce with very few strokes separating the teams at the top of the leader board. The team from Siemens took the first prize with a gross score of 65 and a net score of 54. The team from the American Club took second spot on countback from the third-placed team, made up of friends of CSC staffers, who called themselves "The Handicappers".

The ICRT team, which has a well-earned reputation for playing a lot of golf, this year surprised everyone with a fourth-place finish. Last year's winners, Covestro (formerly Bayer), could not match their form from last year and finished four strokes off the pace in sixth place, while last year's runner-up, Evonik, finished in fifth place. The team from Audi, as the gold sponsor, showed that they are good sports and allowed others to win by playing the most golf with a gross score of 86.

Judging by the length of the longest drives and the nearest the pin flags (more than one was almost in the hole), there were also some excellent individual performances. Prizes were awarded to the best five teams, longest drives and nearest the pins.
