The ECCT’s Low Carbon Initiative (LCI) co-hosted the 2024 Energy Taiwan & Net-Zero Taiwan Forum’s Net Zero Taiwan International Summit. The event brought together industry experts and leaders from the energy, sustainability, and technology sectors to discuss innovative decarbonization solutions and strategies to achieve carbon neutrality. ECCT Chairman Giuseppe Izzo delivered opening remarks.

One of the afternoon’s highlights was the presentation by Christoph Saurenbach, Head of Trade Team at the European Economic and Trade Office (EETO), who spoke about the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Saurenbach explained how CBAM is designed to prevent carbon leakage by placing a carbon price on imports from countries with less stringent climate policies. This mechanism is part of the EU’s broader Green Deal and aims to ensure that the EU’s ambitious emissions reductions are not undermined by carbon-intensive imports.

Saurenbach provided insights into how Taiwanese exporters, particularly those in industries like steel, aluminum, and chemicals, will need to adapt to the CBAM in order to remain competitive in the European market. He stressed that Taiwanese companies should prepare for the forthcoming regulatory changes by implementing greener production methods and reducing the carbon intensity of their products. He also noted that the CBAM will encourage industries outside the EU to adopt stricter environmental standards, creating a ripple effect globally and pushing forward the transition to sustainable production practices.

Several other topics were covered in the event.

Bastien Wang, CTO of Ennowell, gave a presentation on the crucial role of Energy Management Systems (EMS) in reaching net zero emissions. Wang explained how advanced digital systems can optimize energy consumption, reduce waste, and improve operational efficiency. He highlighted several case studies where EMS has been successfully implemented to reduce emissions, demonstrating that these solutions not only support sustainability goals but also deliver financial benefits to businesses.

In her presentation, Inna Braverman, CEO & Co-founder of Eco Wave Power introduced her company’s innovative technology in ocean energy. Braverman explained how wave energy can become a key player in the renewable energy mix, complementing solar and wind power. She shared details about the scalability and reliability of wave power, highlighting it as a viable solution for future renewable energy projects.

In his presentation, Andre Bankenn, Managing Director of 2G Energy International GmbH spoke about the role of hydrogen cogeneration on the road to carbon neutrality.

In his presentation, Harlem Tsai, Global Product Marketing Manager – South Asia Region for ABB Ltd. spoke on the topic “IEC61850, Ethernet Redundancy and Digital Substation journey”.
