Following the signing of the Paris Agreement at the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP 21) in Paris, Taiwan's new government has committed to phasing out nuclear power and increasing renewable-based electricity generation to 20% of supply by 2025. Under the leadership of Tainan City Mayor Lai Ching-de, Tainan has committed to become a low carbon city and has taken action to reach this goal by constructing green buildings, solar and hydro-electric power projects and redeveloping an area of the city into Taiwan's first low carbon model community.
This event has been arranged jointly by the ECCT's LCI and the Tainan City Government to exchange ideas and best practices on government policies and new technologies aimed at speeding up the transition to a low carbon society and boosting economic development at the same time. Stakeholders from industry, government, research institutes and NGOs will participate and recommending strategies to reduce carbon emissions and increase the use of renewable energy.
The forum will feature two sessions covering topics including renewable energy visions for the EU and Taiwan, policies for developing renewable energy and how to reduce carbon emissions in industry, among other subjects.
