According to a 2015 report published in the journal Nature, three million people die from outdoor pollution every year, while an additional 3.4 million die from indoor pollution. Most air pollution deaths are caused by fine particulate matter (tiny particles) that are inhaled deep into the lungs. These cause heart attacks and strokes, which account for three-quarters of annual deaths, with lung cancer and respiratory diseases responsible for the rest. News reports and the availability of real time air quality monitoring systems by Taiwan's Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) have increased awareness of relatively poor air quality in Taiwan but people spend most of their time inside buildings. Indoor air quality (IAQ) is therefore an important determinant of their health and well-being. The government has sponsored the research of indoor air pollution and related health effects for more than 20 years. These efforts have successfully led to the establishment of the IAQ Law in 2011, making Taiwan the second country in the world to pass such legislation. What are the legal building air quality requirements under the law? What action should businesses take to improve the air quality of their offices? Our guest speaker will provide an update on the IAQ Law and offer some practical advice on how to improve the air quality in buildings for the benefit of employees and customers.
