Corporations in Taiwan find it difficult to hire good talent. At the same time, disabled people are actively looking for suitable careers. However due to the lack of understanding of their abilities, corporations have been reluctant to hire disabled people. Companies have the preconception that disabled people would drag down other staff members' productivity and would be a burden to office morale. However, successful examples can be found at Standard Charter Bank Taiwan, where one of their visually-impaired telemarketers was recognized for his achievements in front of 200 global staff in the UK. Another example is Fubon Bank, where the most successful employee-benefit programme is massage by visually-impaired people. Taipei City Government, with its matching and training experience, can find mutually beneficial solutions to this problem. Our guest speaker will talk about the activities of the Taipei City's Foreign and Disabled Office.
About the speaker:
Petersan Chien is the Assistant Manager of the Foreign and Disabled Office, in Taipei City Government's Department of Labor. Chien has been working at the Foreign and Disabled Office for over 13 years. He currently works with over 1,700 disabled workers. He has help 1,000 of them secure full time positions, and the other 700 have worked for more than three months. He has been instrumental in developing one of the most comprehensive structures for employment of the disabled, fully utilizing government resources to help those who have the drive and desire to enter the work force.
As a disabled person himself, he entered the workforce soon after graduating from junior high school. However, he attended night schools after work and obtained a Master's degree after ten years. Having participated in the work force, he realized that even being disabled, one must work hard to be recognized by peers and superiors. This belief drove him to help and motivate other disabled people to enter the work force and achieve their full potential.
