ECCT CSR Committee Special Event Together with the Taipei European School
(TES), and the New Taipei City Government
2020 Beach Cleaning Day
Date: Saturday, 17 October 2020
Time: 09:00:-12:30
Location: Baisha Bay, New Taipei City / 新北市白沙灣風景區
Our oceans are increasingly being polluted by waste. According to National Taiwan Ocean University, nearly 8 million tonnes of plastic rubbish enter the oceans every year, 86% of it in the seas in Asia.
The World Economic Forum predicts that by 2050 there will be more plastic in the oceans than fish. Plastic debris makes up around 85% of all the rubbish that washes up on beaches and waterways and oceans. Once in the water, plastic never completely biodegrades but instead breaks down into smaller pieces that is sometimes mistaken for food by marine animals.
Fishing lines take 600 years to biodegrade, aluminium cans up to 200 years and tin cans around 50 years. During this time, they are not only eye-sores but can also potentially be a hazard and health risk to both animals and humans. There is already evidence that humans are ingesting microplastics when eating fish and other seafood. Researchers have found that 95% of fish have an average of up to 5 microplastic pieces, while 100% of sea turtles have ingested microplastics.
In order to raise awareness and take proactive action to mitigate some of the damage to our oceans caused by human activity, the ECCT is, once again, teaming up with the Taipei European School to hold the annual beach cleaning event.
The ECCT’s CSR committee sincerely invites you to bring your friends and family members to clean the beach together and make a contribution to Taiwan and the environment. We look forward to seeing you there!
