This event is mainly conducted in Mandarin. English interpretation will be offered on site.

After expanding rapidly during the global coronavirus pandemic, Taiwan’s economy experienced its first quarterly GDP contraction in the fourth quarter of 2022. This dragged down overall GDP growth in 2022 to 2.43% (based on preliminary estimates). Tumbling export figures were then main contributor. Exports in the fourth quarter fell 8.6% year-on-year, the first drop in 26 consecutive quarters. In addition, the spill-over effects of geopolitical conflicts, high inflation and rising interest rates have taken a toll on the local economy. Taiwan’s manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) has been below the neutral 50 mark for seven consecutive months, indicating further economic contraction ahead.

How long is the slowdown likely to last and are there signs of a rebound in economic activity? At this event our guest speaker will give a summary of the main factors likely to affect the economy in the year ahead. He will also provide some perspectives on Taiwan’s biomedical industry.

Among other topics, the presentation will cover the following:

  • Taiwan’s economic turning point
  • Spill-over effects from rising US interest rates and US dollar appreciation
  • Global and Taiwan economic outlook for 2023
  • How Taiwan's economy continues to move forward at a fast pace
  • Views on Taiwan's biomedical industry.
