The National Health Insurance Administration (NHIA) has announced plans to set up a specialised office to speed up the process of adding new drugs to National Health Insurance (NHI) coverage. This comes in response to concerns from medical welfare groups, including the Formosa Cancer Foundation and Taiwan Young Patient Association, that it takes about two years for new cancer drugs to be assessed and included in the list of drugs covered by the NHIA.

While the industry has welcomed the NHIA’s intention to accelerate the introduction of new drugs and technologies, our guest speaker will provide an update on the NHIA’s reform plans and answer questions from members.  

About the speaker

Dr Shih Chung-liang is the Director-General of the NHIA. He holds a PhD from the Institute of Health Policy and Management at National Taiwan University and an MD from Kaohsiung Medical University. He has held numerous positions in the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and its predecessor, the Department of Health (DOH), most recently as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Previously he was Director-General of the MOHW’s Department of Medical Affairs, MOHW Secretary General, Director-General of the Department of Planning, under the DOH and MOHW and Director-General of the DOH’s Bureau of Medical Affairs. Prior to this he was Medical Secretary of Taoyuan General Hospital and practiced as an Attending Physician in Emergency Medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital.
