Climate change mitigation plans and low carbon initiatives across all industry sectors have gained traction in developed economies in recent years. In Taiwan, the Legislative Yuan passed the Climate Change Mitigation Act last year, mandating all central government agencies to take actions to lower their carbon footprints and emissions. According to a Taiwan MOEA survey, hospitals account for the highest share of energy use (16%) across all sectors, excluding manufacturing. The per capita carbon emissions from Taiwan’s healthcare system are also above the world average, according to the Health Care’s Climate Footprint (2019) report published by Health Care Without Harm (HCWH). In recognition of the need for the healthcare system to respond to challenges of climate change, the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and the Ministry of Environment (MOENV) have announced joint pilot reward programmes this year to encourage hospitals to launch carbon reduction campaigns. This forum aims to share expertise and best practices from Europe on green healthcare and engage in an in-depth discussion with Taiwan policymakers and hospital management personnel on how to advance green practices in the healthcare sector.
