2020 will mark the 6th edition of the ECCT’s EU-Taiwan Telecom Forum since the first was held in 2009. The event is the largest and most prominent business forum for the telecom industry hosted biannually by the ECCT that brings together telecom industry experts, senior regulatory officials and executives from companies operating in all sectors of the telecom industry and supply chain, including all major telecom operators and equipment suppliers. As with previous forums, this year the ECCT has invited prominent regulatory officials from Taiwan and Europe to participate as speakers and panellists and senior industry executives and experts to attend as part of the audience. Speakers based in Taiwan will participate in person while speakers based overseas will participate via video conference. Simultaneous translation will be provided for the audience.
The purpose of the half day forum is for government and industry experts from Europe and Taiwan to share information on regulations and best practices, as well as discuss trends and business opportunities in the telecommunications field. The theme and focus of this year’s forum is on 5G opportunities and challenges.
This year’s telecom forum comes at an opportune time for the telecommunications industry given that authorities have just issued 5G licences to Taiwan’s major operators and they are in the process of reviewing and revising the regulatory framework for the needs of the 5G era.
As new telecommunications technologies continue to be introduced and improved, they are having an ever-greater impact on every aspect of the economy. This year’s forum will feature insights from Taiwanese and European regulators, telecom industry experts and scholars on the whole range of opportunities and challenges that 5G telecom promises to bring. In particular, regulators from Taiwan will share plans and prospects for Taiwan’s 5G Action Plan from 2019-2022, the New Taiwan Telecom Act and data security and privacy in Taiwan. Regulators from Europe will share insights on the Open Democratic Sustainable Digital Society, AI and GDPR regulation in Europe and the European Digital Strategy.
Panellists will also engage in an interactive discussion on the main topics outlined above as well as a panel discussion on the topic of regulation of social media.
Besides the important technical topics related to technology and communications developments, the forum will cover issues that are important to maintain and enhance Taiwan international standing and reputation as an open and democratic society such as digital rights, privacy and the regulation of AI and social media.
The forum will be of interest to members engaged in all aspects of the TMC industries and its support services.
ROC government officials attending will include representatives from the National Communications Commission (NCC), the Ministry of Transportation and Communication (MoTC), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the National Development Council (NDC).
