Hualien’s blueprint for sustainable governance, economic and community development

As part of the ECCT’s efforts as a nationwide organisation to foster relations and business opportunities all across Taiwan, we have arranged a Premium Event lunch with Hualien Country Magistrate Hsu Chen-Wei (equivalent to mayor), who will be visiting Taipei at the time. At the event, Magistrate Hsu will give a presentation to introduce her county and give an update on business developments and opportunities in the county in line with her strong emphasis on sustainable governance principles and sustainable practices, particularly in terms of economic, environmental and social development.

Among other topics, Magistrate Hsu will give an update on tourism industry developments, explain how her government encourages and assists businesses in responsible practices and investments, carbon sequestration and reduction plans, policies and infrastructure plans aligned with United Nations' 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and goal for net zero emissions by 2050. This will include an introduction to the DAKA Resource Recovery Center, designed to process and utilise up to 200 tons of waste per day and the The PuShiKe Biomass Energy Center, located in Yuli Township, the first livestock manure biogas power generation facility in Taiwan.

About the speaker
Hsu Chen-Wei is Magistrate of Hualien County. Previously she has held various positions, including serving as a legislator in the 9th Legislative Yuan, the 20th Central Executive Committee member of the Kuomintang (KMT), President of the International Tzu Chi Society Hualien Chapter, President of the International Lions Club Hualien Chapter, Chairperson of the Hualien County Patrol Team, and Chairperson of the Hualien County Fire Bureau Women's Fire Prevention Team. She was also a member of the Hualien County Children and Family Care Association. During her tenure, she proposed the "Eight Major Policies," which encompassed initiatives in transportation network development, urban aesthetics, international tourism marketing, youth employment in rural areas, comprehensive long-term care services, education enhancement, indigenous community empowerment, and support for new immigrants' integration into the local community. Magistrate Hsu is committed to promoting youth and women's development. She established the Youth Entrepreneurship Center and Startup Base to create more job opportunities for young people. She is a graduate of Chinese Culture University.
