2016 will mark the 18th year since the ECCT held its first annual round table lunch with the Taipei City Government (TCG), a tradition which has continued every year since. As in previous years, this year's event will provide an exclusive opportunity for ECCT members to discuss issues of concern or mutual interest with the mayor, deputy mayor and a full delegation of senior TCG cabinet officials, who will be in attendance.

Taipei City is facing a number of challenges. Over the past year several instances of heavy rain and flooding has resulted in poor quality tap water for Taipei residents. How will the city find a long-term solution to the problem of providing safe tap water? Residents are also concerned about the city's disaster preparedness in the event of typhoons (flooding and wind damage) or earthquakes, air pollution, disease prevention for mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue fever.

In addition, the event will offer an opportunity for the mayor to talk about his plans for future development regarding Songshan Airport, urban renewal and Shezi island 社子島. He will also provide an update on plans for the 2017 university games, public transport infrastructure and traffic controls, including how to reduce traffic congestion in Dazhi 大直, Neihu 內湖 and the Nangang Exhibition Center 南港展覽中心.

The event will be open only to ECCT members. Mayor Ko will give a short briefing to guests on his vision and plans for the forthcoming year and beyond, after which a round-table lunch will be held where members can raise questions or discuss issues of concern with city government officials.

Among other subjects, members will be able to raise and discuss the following subjects:

‧ Quality of living issues (water quality, air, noise and environmental pollution), emergency response facilities and fire and flood prevention plans.

‧ Plans for the 2017 university games.

‧ Plans to improve traffic safety and communications infrastructure (such as public Wi-Fi).

‧ Major infrastructure and urban renewal projects and tourism.

‧ Plans for intelligent infrastructure including green buildings, electric vehicles and smart grids.

‧ An update on public transport infrastructure including roads and mass rapid transit (MRT) lines.

About the speaker

Dr Ko Wen-je was elected mayor of Taipei City in 2014. Prior to this he was an attending physician and Chairman of the Department of Traumatology at National Taiwan University Hospital. He was also a professor at National Taiwan University College of Medicine specialising in trauma, intensive care, organ transplant and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). He received both his medical degree and medical doctorate from National Taiwan University.
