ECCT PREMIUM EVENT
Towards smarter grids and smarter homes
The rise and development of smart grid technology in the EU and Taiwan
Guest speakers
Oleg Logvinov, Director, Market Development, STMicroelectronics
Lin Wen-yen, President, Tatung Company
In the global drive towards sustainability, much focus to date has been on how to reduce the energy consumption and carbon emissions of power plants and major industrial and transportation sector users. This is understandable given that they are directly responsible for the largest volume of carbon emissions. However, what is often overlooked is the fact that so much energy is consumed (wasted) unnecessarily due to inefficient power management during transmission and by end-users. This is especially the case in commercial and residential buildings and the lighting, equipment and appliances they are equipped with, which are often turned on and consuming power even when they are not needed.
European countries and firms are pioneers in the development of smart grid technology that monitors the consumption of electricity and can cut the use of power when it is not needed, thereby saving energy, reducing costs and CO2 emissions. Smart grid systems and devices are becoming more sophisticated and increasingly cheaper. As the trend continues, we can expect growing awareness of the cost savings to be gained to result in the larger adoption and installation of smart grid devices in homes and businesses.
Speakers at this event will provide members with an update on the latest status of smart home and smart energy technology developments and some insights into potential business opportunities associated with this trend.
