The world is currently living through a coronavirus pandemic. But the rising level of obesity is affecting a much larger portion of the population. If Michelangelo had sculpted David in 2021, he might look like this...
According to data from a study conducted from 2013-2016 in Taiwan, 43.7% of adult males and 30.8% of adult females have a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or above, defined by the World Obesity Federation as overweight, while a growing number have a BMI over 30, meeting the WHO’s definition of obese. Maintaining a healthy weight is important for health. In addition to lowering the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure, it can also lower the risk of many different cancers.
It is well-established that a poor diet and a lack of exercise leads to weight gain but, according to Harvard University, there is a growing body of research that suggests that there's a link between how much people sleep and how much they weigh. At this event, our guest speaker will draw on his knowledge and experience as a physician in the United States and Taiwan to talk about all the inter-related genetic and lifestyle factors that lead to weight gain and offer his advice to people with above average BMIs on safe ways to lose weight and improve their quality of life.
Among other subjects, our guest speaker's presentation will cover the following:
• The latest trends and medical research related to obesity
• Dietary advice: what to eat and what to avoid
• Lifestyle advice: optimal exercise and sleeping habits to lose weight and maintain a healthy body.
This event will be held at the Xuexue Food Laboratory, part of the Xuexue Institute, which is dedicated to food and cultural education and creating unique food experiences, using only local ingredients.
To match the theme of this event and the mission of the PEL platform, the menu will feature delicious but low calorie and nutritious dishes using plant-based ingredients.
