Taiwan has a new president. Americans will go to the polls in November. China, distracted by domestic difficulties, continues a military buildup aimed primarily at Taiwan. What are the factors affecting the risk of conflict in the Taiwan Strait? Join former CNN correspondent Mike Chinoy and former AP correspondent Peter Enav, now the editors of the recently created Taiwan Strait Risk Report, for a discussion about the dangers facing the region.

About the speakers

Peter Enav is the founder and editor of Taiwan Strait Risk Report. He has spent 17 years living and working in Asia, including nine (from 2005-2014) as the head of the Taipei bureau of the Associated Press, where he closely monitored Taiwan defence issues and the evolution of the US-China-Taiwan strategic triangle. While living in Israel in the 1990s, he established the risk consultancy Cosmopolitics Inc., which produced a series of in-depth reports on political stability in major Middle Eastern oil producers for Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry, as well as for Financial Times Energy Publications in London. Cosmopolitics also produced Middle East Risk Report, a monthly analysis of political and macro-economic developments in leading Middle Eastern countries. Enav has a BA in Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and an MA in Chinese Studies from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a resident of Melbourne, Australia.

Mike Chinoy is a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the US-China Institute of the University of Southern California and a consulting editor at the Taiwan Strait Risk Report. Before joining USC in 2006, Chinoy spent 24 years as a foreign correspondent for CNN. He was the network’s first Bureau Chief in Beijing and served as Bureau Chief in Hong Kong and as Senior Asia Correspondent. He began his career with CNN as a correspondent based in London covering global trouble spots. In the 1970s and early 1980s, he worked for CBS News and NBC News based in Hong Kong. He has covered many of the most important news events in Asia in recent decades. He is the author of five books, including the just-published Assignment China: An Oral History of American Journalists in the People's Republic. He has a BA from Yale and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia University. He is based in Taipei.
