Donald Trump is set to take office as the president of the United States on 20 January 2017. As the most unconventional candidate elected to that office in living memory, the world is waiting to see if the action he will take once in office will match the rhetoric of his election campaign.
During his election campaign, Trump vowed to build a wall on the Mexican border, repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, a signature programme of his predecessor, Barack Obama, and pull the US out of the Paris climate agreement. Of perhaps greater concern to America's trading partners is Trump's promise to withdraw from the fledgling Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement and tear up the existing North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
Since winning the election Trump has selected anti-establishment firebrands to cabinet and advisory positions. However, he has also appointed some establishment figures and shown a willingness to modify or at least soften some of the positions taken during the campaign. However, it remains to be seen what the president elect will do once he is actually in office. This special lunch will take place just over one month after President Trump's inauguration. Our guest speaker will offer his insights on what the first 30 days in office imply for the world and Taiwan.
Among other subjects, he will talk about:
Trump's cabinet appointments and policy advisers
What Trump's actions in the first month imply about his priority policies and likely future direction
The implications of Trump's phone call with President Tsai Ing-wen for US-Taiwan relations and trade
The future of the US's trade and investment relations with the EU, Asia and Taiwan.
