Taiwan has received universal praise from the international community about how its healthcare system and authorities have dealt with the coronavirus pandemic. But the policies, control measures and statistics take on a whole new meaning if you actually experience it first-hand.

Our guest speaker was the 50th person in Taiwan to contract the coronavirus. He spent 19 days in a hospital in Taichung being treated until he was finally released.

At this webinar he will share his story of the entire experience including:
• How he contracted the virus
• How he was diagnosed
• What symptoms he had and how it felt
• What kind of treatment he received
• How healthcare authorities and healthcare workers treated him during the process
• How people have responded to him since his release
• His overall assessment of Taiwan’s healthcare system.

About the guest speaker
Douglas Habecker is a long-term American resident of Taiwan and was actually born in Hualien while his parents were working there. He considers himself a classic example of a “third culture kid”, attending American schools in Taiwan but growing up to love the local culture and people. Today, he serves as co-publisher of Compass Magazine, a monthly Taichung-based English-Chinese city guide magazine that he helped start about two decades ago, and its affiliated www.taiwanfun.com website. He is also a long-serving board member of Taichung American Chamber of Commerce, which he currently heads as chairman, and an experienced cross-cultural trainer who has led programmes for a wide variety of multinational companies. Other previous roles that he has held over the years include central Taiwan bureau supervisor/reporter for the Taiwan News, central Taiwan reporter for ICRT, international consultant to the Executive Yuan’s Research, Development and Evaluation Commission (and its successor, the National Development Council), English editor for the Taiwan Institute of Economic Research, and host of his own weekly English/Chinese “Taichung What’s Fun” radio show on Sunny FM89.1. When not working, he also enjoys road biking, managing a Taichung international men’s football (soccer) team, and reading military history.
