From practicing as an architect to taking on the position as commissioner in charge of urban development in Taipei City, Lin Jou-min's switch in roles has not only brought an intriguing twist to his personal career but also ushered in a new mindset and atmosphere for the public sector in Taipei.
As the first architect appointed to run the city's department of urban development, his expertise and determination has become well-known and aroused public awareness about ongoing issues and projects that will change the urban landscape and people's lives.
Taipei is a city where people's voices are often strongly expressed, which is why communication between the government and citizens is a key factor in creating and realizing any urban regeneration opportunities. Whether in the discussions within the department or in the face-to-face debates with the citizens involved, Lin has learnt during the past sixteen months in office that efforts to truly engage with people must be earnest and continuous.
In this speech, our guest speaker will share his unique experiences in gaining an understanding of Taipei's challenges and some of the development plans of the administration under Mayor Ko Wen-jo.
About the speaker
Lin Jou-min positions himself not only as an architect but also as a cultural designer committed to advancing Taiwan's architectural environment for all walks of life. Over the past three decades, Lin has established a reputation through participation in public projects by renovating and converting historical buildings into cultural facilities. In recent years, Lin has extended the scope of his work to more sophisticated settings by integrating architectural, interior and landscape elements into bases for Taiwan's developing cultural industry. His works have been recognized through winning international design awards, including the American Institute of Architects (AIA) New York Chapter's Design Award - Architecture Merit Award in 2006, AIA New York's Design Award for Excellence in the Urban Planning and Design Category in 2007, and AIA New York's Honor Award in the Urban Design Category in 2013.
In December, 2014, Lin was appointed by Mayor Ko Wen-jo as commissioner of the department of urban development. This has allowed him to bring his expertise and enthusiasm for the city to the public sector. Lin views his new role as an opportunity to contribute to his home city. He is committed to always viewing things from the standpoint of Taiwanese people and to continuously strive for solutions to build a better urban environment in Taiwan.
