On 3 June 2015, the Ministry of Labour announced amendments to the Labour Standards Law (LSL) that will have profound implications for all businesses in Taiwan. Effective from 1 January 2016, employees will be allowed to work for a maximum of eight hours a day or 40 hours per week. In addition, employers will be required to keep and maintain attendance records, accurate to the minute, for five years.
While exceptions will be allowed to provide some flexibility (with the consent of a labour union or, in the absence of a union, a labour-management conference) an employee's total working time may not exceed 48 hours in any given week.
The new regulations have raised serious concerns for ECCT members in a number of industries. Companies in the financial services sector, industries which require employees to work overtime for several consecutive days or jobs which require salespersons to be out of the office for extended periods of time will have great difficulty in complying with the new requirements.
At this specially-arranged lunch our guest speaker will provide an overview and explanation of the new regulations and answer any questions of clarification raised by members.
