European firms continue to lead the world in developing innovative medicines and devices to extend and improve the quality of lives of patients. Taiwan remains an important market to European firms. Like all healthcare authorities globally, the Ministry of Health and Welfare is facing the challenges of caring for an aging population, rising instances of non-communicable diseases and limited budgets. Finding the best ways to balance sometimes competing needs and ensure the long-term substainability of Taiwan's national healthcare system is no easy task and requires clear communication between and commitment from all stakeholders.

At this specially-arranged lunch, Dr Lee Po-chang, the new Director-General of the NHIA will provide an overview of the status and market share of European healthcare-related firms in Taiwan over the past five years. In addition, he will offer his perspective on future policy direction and how the ECCT members can contribute.

About the speaker
Dr. Lee Po-chang has been the Director-General of the National Health Insurance Administration, under the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MoHW) since June 2016. He has studied both medicine and law and practiced as a medical academic and surgeon with expertise in organ transplants. He began his career as a medical scholar with stints in the United States and Japan. He was a visiting scientist at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine in Japan, a post-doctoral scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles and a visiting scholar at the University of Minnesota and Johns Hopkins University in the United States. From 2001-2007 he was Professor of Surgery and from 2004-2007 Chairman of Department of Surgery at the Medical College of National Cheng Kung University. From 2008-2011 he was President of The Transplantation Society of Taiwan. From 2012 until taking up is current position in June 2016, he was Superintendent of Tainan Hospital. Dr Lee holds a medical degree from Taipei Medical College as well as a Master of Law degree from National Cheng Kung University.
