ECCT members and guests are all kindly invited to attend the next exciting Wine Tasting Event at La Giara with the theme of wines in Puglia, Italy.
Puglia, which forms the 'heel' of Italy's boot-shaped outline, is an agricultural paradise.
Wine grapes have been cultivated in Puglia for almost three thousand years. Viticulture is deeply rooted in local traditions but until 20 or so years a large proportion of Puglia's grapes were used to add "substance" to wines produced in the rest of Italy and France. For this reason, Puglia has been mostly known as a wine reservoir, or "The European wine cellar".
Thankfully this is no longer the case. Puglia wine industry has realized that contributing cheap wine for distillation or to help fill the European wine lake was a flawed strategy. There is a new emphasis on quality throughout Puglia's regions, and both DOC (Denominazione di origine controllata or controlled designation of origin) and IGT (Indicazione Geografica Tipica or geographical region of origin) appellations are attempting to up their game to compete with bottled wines on a world stage. Consequently the region now has 4 DOCGs (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita, the highest classification for Italian wines) and 29 DOCs, more than any other region in the south, and also 6 IGTs that produce increasing quantities of quality wines that are acknowledged internationally for representing excellent value.
If Italy is the largest producer of wine in the world, it is largely thanks to Puglia, which produces more than any other Italian region, about 17% of the total!

The evening will be hosted by the wine connoisseur Mr. Piergiorgio Latuille.
