In 2014 close to 10 million passengers, around half of them tourists from mainland China, arrived in Taiwan through Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport (TTIA). This compares to fewer than four million arrivals in 2008. The more than doubling of passenger volume in recent years has necessitated large-scale renovations of TTIA's passenger terminals and runways. The consequent improvements in the quality and efficiency of TTIA's services have been recognized. TTIA received high rankings in 11 categories of the 2014 World Airline Awards, conducted by UK-based consultancy firm Skytrax, including the No. 1 ranking in airport staff service. Based on the survey of 410 airports and 12.85 million passengers, Skytrax ranked TTIA No. 17 overall globally and ninth in Asia. Besides the top ranking in service, TTIA was ranked No. 2 in airport immigration, No. 4 in airport security, No. 4 in baggage delivery, No. 8 in airport leisure amenities and No. 9 in airport shopping.
While TTIA has coped well until now, if passenger volume continues to rise, further improvements and an increase in capacity are needed. TTIA needs a third runway and a third terminal as well as upgrades to its security, immigration, cargo, baggage and passenger logistics systems as well as shopping and leisure facilities.
The ECCT has arranged an exclusive meeting with Taoyuan International Airport Corporation (TIAC) CEO David Fei to discuss all issues concerning ECCT members in the airline, travel & tourism, hospitality, retail, luxury goods, logistics, airport IT (airline passenger, air traffic control and security systems) industries. Among other items on the agenda will be: airport maintenance and renovations (including scheduled runway maintenance and ongoing renovations of Terminal 1), an update on progress of the airport MRT line and MRT check-in services, the timetable for construction of Terminal 3 and the third runway, the increase of airport service fees and how to improve communication between ECCT members and TIAC.
Following the meeting with TIAC, guests will enjoy a tour of TTIA and a lunch featuring guest speaker Kevin Chiang, President of Ever Rich Corporation, who will share information and analyis about duty free shopping in Taiwan, trends and future prospects. Among other subjects, his presentation will cover how shopping habits have shifted in recent years, compare the shopping habits of independent versus group travellers and some of the main differences between the shopping behaviour of customers from mainland China, other Asian countries and the west.
