Rail is among the most energy efficient modes of transport for freight and passengers. In Taiwan, it is one of the primary modes of public transport, providing vital connections within and between cities and regions, and guaranteeing affordable passenger mobility.

Taiwan has launched the Forward-looking Infrastructure Development Program funding railway projects to provide safe and efficient transportation. Many plans for new construction are in progress throughout the island. In July 2019 the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA) announced the start of a six-year safe railway initiative to improve train efficiency and safety. The TRA is purchasing 600 new intercity trains and 520 new commuter trains, and also plans to introduce 100 hybrid carriages to tourism regions.

At this event, our guest speaker, Mr. Tu Wei 杜微副局長 will share the TRA’s 10-year mega plan of train and system upgrades for sustainable operations including projects collaborated with European companies, and how the TRA can lower transport energy use and reduce environmental impacts by diversifying energy sources and providing more efficient mobility.

Mr. Tu Wei

Deputy Director-General, Taiwan Railway Administration

Mr. Tu Wei, Deputy Director General of TRA, holds a master degree from National Taiwan University’s Departmental of Political Science.
He has over 33 years of experience in the transportation sector since 1986. He was previously the Director of TRA’s Transportation Department for six years and promoted to be the Deputy Director General in 2018.
