As part of the ECCT's ongoing programme as a nationwide association to actively engage in cooperation with municipal governments all across Taiwan, members are invited to participate in a visit to Penghu Island, which will include lunch with Penghu Country Magistrate Chen Kuang-fu (equivalent of mayor) and a tour of the island. Penghu is a popular tourist destination, famous for its beaches, temples and traditional Chinese-style homes surrounded by coral walls. In the summer months Penghu is hot and beautiful, while in winter and spring the archipelago is possibly the windiest place in the northern hemisphere. Many consider Penghu a windsurfing mecca and the Canary Islands of the Orient. Penghu has also been promoted as a test-bed for green and sustainable development, including renewable energy and electric vehicles.
The lunch will feature a presentation by Mayor Chen. After lunch, guests will be taken on a guided tour of the major infrastructure projects such as Penghu's desalination plant and wind turbines.
This trip will provide members with a unique opportunity to meet Mayor Chen, county government officials and learn about business opportunities in Penghu. During the lunch, Mayor Chen will outline his vision for the future development of Penghu. Among other subjects he will talk about:
- Penghu's plans to develop tourism and other industries and its interaction with the central government.
- How Penghu will balance future economic development with the promotion of tourism and the preservation of the marine environment and historical sites.
- Business opportunities in the travel and tourism, retail, luxury goods, energy and engineering sectors.
- An update on Penghu's green infrastructure projects including onshore and offshore wind turbines, electric vehicle pilot programme, smart grid, power management and seawater desalination.
