To review and analyse the insights to be put forward at the 6th Workshop on EU-China Relations in Global Politics, to be held at National Taiwan University from 15-16 March, this lunch will feature a panel debate on the application of EU-Asian sustainable management in the domains of politics, finance, logistics, consumerism and energy.
The event will be jointly hosted by the ECCT, the UACES Collaborative Research Network on EU-China Relations and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung - Regional Project ‘Energy Security and Climate Change'.
At the event, distinguished panellists from business, academia and the think tank world will share their expertise on concrete case studies, with a view to inspire new business opportunities and cooperation between Europe and Asia in the field of sustainable management. They will also share insights gleaned from the two-day workshop covering subjects ranging from climate change and energy security to renewable energy development and the sustainable management of cities.
About the organisers
The 6th workshop on EU-China Relations in Global Politics is to be jointly organized by the Graduate School of Global Politics at Free University of Berlin and the ESSCA EU Asia Institute. The event is to be held under the framework of the UACES Collaborative Research Network on EU-China Relations. UACES is an academic membership association for contemporary European studies. The EU Asia Institute is the research centre for interdisciplinary social sciences and humanities set up by ESSCA in 2014. Founded in 1909 in Angers, France, ESSCA is a grande ecole specializing in business and offering a wide portfolio of programmes and degrees in management. The mission of the Institute is to make an original contribution to the academic community of European Studies and research on EU-Asia relations and provide interdisciplinary input from this area to the programmes offered by ESSCA on its campuses in Angers, Paris, Budapest and Shanghai.
About the panellists
Dr May Tan-Mullins is Professor in International Relations, Dean of the Graduate School and Director of Research for the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Director of Institute of Asia and Pacific Studies University of Nottingham in Ningbo China. She is also the series editor of Palgrave Series in Asia and Pacific Studies. Dr Tan-Mullins joined the University of Nottingham Ningbo China in 2009 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to full professor in 2015. She was also a recipient of the esteemed Lord Dearing Excellent Teaching Award. Her research interests are the political ecology of rising China, environmental and energy justice, poverty alleviation and building resilience for the poorest and most vulnerable. Based on her expertise in various international development and human security issues, she is a consultant for the UNDP, National Bureau of Asian Research (US), the Revenue Watch Institute (US) and the Chinese government. Professor Tan-Mullins was also awarded the prestigious global Rockefeller Bellagio writing residency in Bellagio Centre, Lake Como in Italy. Some of her most current research projects are together with colleagues from King's College London UK, TU-Delft, Freiburg University Germany and University of Toulouse I Capitole where they were awarded over a million euros by European and Chinese funders to look at a comparative study between smart eco-cities in Europe and China' (2015-2018). Another project is with the University of Nottingham UK and University of Philippines on ‘Poverty Alleviation in Post Typhoon Yolanda', awarded by ESRC-DFID (2015-2018).
Giuseppe Izzo is the Regional Vice President and Taiwan Managing Director for STMicroelectronics' Asia Pacific Region. He joined SGS-Thomson Microelectronics (now STMicroelectronics) in 1987 and shortly thereafter relocated to Asia, living and working in many different Countries, from Korea to Taiwan, to Hong Kong to China. He has held various positions within ST's Asia Pacific organization, covering marketing, application development and product design for power management, consumer and computer systems, automotive, and multi-segment products. Izzo established ST's Automotive and Multi-Systems Competence Centers in Shanghai and Power Management Competence Center in Taiwan, contributing to the company's success in power management solutions for PC motherboards and building its presence in the car body and power train arenas, as well as the digital audio markets in the Asia Pacific region. He has been working in Taiwan, where he has intermittently lived for about 15 years. From 2013-2014 he served as the Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) and has since 2015 served as Vice Chairman, a position he maintains in 2017. He graduated with a degree in electronic engineering from the University of Naples, Italy.
Erdal Elver is the President and CEO of Siemens Limited Taiwan, a position he has held for over four years. He has over 11 years of working experience in the Asia Pacific region. Prior to his post in Taiwan he worked in China from 2004-2008 and Vietnam from 2008-2012. He is on the ECCT's board of directors, where he was an Executive Director in 2014 and 2015. He is actively involved as a Steering Committee Member in the ECCT Low Carbon Initiative, where he focuses on advocacy and best practices. He is also active as a member of the working group of the German Trade Office in Taiwan.
